Across rural Romania, steady food and reliable work aren't something families and children's centres can take for granted, and going without either has a way of compounding the other. The Big Love Farm started with an unlikely idea in 2017: buy some cows. Twenty three of them, to be exact. It's now a working farm run day to day by Aurel and Nicu, in partnership with our friends at Outstretched Hands, with a growing dairy herd, poly tunnels of fresh produce, and a small team of local workers.
What began as a handful of cows has become one of the most practical, visible ways Big Love supports the community and children's centres in Romania. The herd has grown to over 60 cows, producing around 850 litres of milk and 120kg of cheese every day, some of which is sold in local markets to help the farm sustain itself. A milking parlour, funded through donation, now lets the team milk 12 cows in 15 minutes, a huge step up from milking by hand, and one that's freed up time for the rest of the work the farm does.
Milk and cheese goes straight to children's centres nearby. The jobs go to local people who need steady work, with extra summer roles opening up for harvesting and fruit collection. And the produce, watermelons, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, feeds the wider community through the seasons.

One cow on Big Love Farm does more than you'd think. She doesn't just produce around 12 litres of milk a day. That turns into 2kg of cheese, sold into local shops and markets.
